Posted: 20-Aug-2001 [Source: FT]

[Joint collaboration to assist Japanese manufacturers in areas of marketing and distribution in efforts to compete globally.]

by Michiyo Nakamoto, Tokyo -- "NEC and the Matsushita group, which on Tuesday unveiled an alliance for the development of mobile phones, said the first fruit of their co-operation would be a third-generation handset for the European market.

"The companies, NEC, Matsushita Communications (MCI) and Matsushita Electronics (MEI), indicated their alliance was aimed at competing on the global stage, particularly against Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker. NEC and MCI are Japan's top mobile phone makers while MEI is the leading consumer electronics group. The three companies see Europe as the first stage of their battle to compete globally.

"There is a very strong company called Nokia and (the fact is that) we are all competing against this one company," said Mineo Sugiyama, senior executive vice-president of NEC.
