Telecoms firms urged to delay 3G launch

[Opertors encouraged to utilize GPRS as a "nursery slope" to make certain things operate correctly before rolling out 3G.]

by Dan Milmo -- "Telecoms companies have been urged to delay the full-scale launch of third generation services for another five years.

"The much-hyped 3G mobile phone revolution will be a disaster if the financial community presses operators for a quick return on their investment, according to Ovum, the analyst and consulting company.

"Eirwen Nichols, a consultant at Ovum, said banks must show patience until 2006, when 3G services will be widely available.

"If you are in the financial community and you are wanting to see a short-term return, then it will be a disaster. You will force phone operators into great financial difficulties," said Ms Nichols.
