[Toshiba to maintain handset production focus in Japan prompted by DoCoMo's commercial launching of 3G next month in juxtaposition to Europe's 3G timeline which is somewhat uncertain.]

Tokyo -- "Toshiba Corp will slow down development of third-generation mobile phones for Europe as global economic weakness threatens the timeline for introduction of 3G services, the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun said on Thursday.

"Instead, the electronics conglomerate will focus on the domestic market, the business newspaper said.

"No one at the company was immediately available for comment. The newspaper said Toshiba had planned to transfer 100 researchers to Siemens AG (SIEGn) to work on the introduction of dual-mode handsets in late 2002 that would work under both 3G and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) networks.
