Ericsson, world leaders in mobile telephony, and Vytel Asia, a subsidiary of Australia's leading construction and engineering company Leighton, have signed a strategic co-operation agreement for network rollouts in the Asia Pacific region.

The two companies are combining their expertise and capacity to meet the growing demand for the fast rollout of mobile networks, primarily 3rd generation (3G) networks.

The documented capability to provide rapid buildouts of turnkey projects will be of decisive importance for mobile operators in the region.

"In establishing a close cooperation with leading engineering companies Ericsson is maintaining its position as the largest turnkey supplier in telecommunications solutions," said Melker Norlund, Vice President, Business Unit Global Services, Ericsson.

"This underscores the competitiveness and strength of Ericsson 3G offering and our ability to offer total solutions to operators worldwide," he said.

Ericsson is the world leader of 2G and 3G technology and Vytel Asia is a regional leader in the management of large and complex projects. This gives us a distinct market advantage, with major opportunities for both companies," Mr. Norlund said.

Vytel Asia's Director, Mr. Bob de Boer, said that both companies stand to gain from the agreement.

"We are delighted to have entered this strategic co-operation agreement with Ericsson, one of the world's leading telecommunications companies," Mr. deBoer said.

"The agreement will benefit both parties as we work together to capitalize on the growth of telecommunications services in this region," he said.

Vytel Asia is a multi-disciplined provider of services and infrastructure to Asia's telecommunications market. Based in Hong Kong, the company has associated offices in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and China.

In addition to providing both cable and wireless telecommunications infrastructure, the company also offers design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance services.
