"According to Ireland-based MobileGIS, the open-standards GeoMobilIT Service platform paves the way for worldwide deployment of wireless location-based services. It does this by eliminating confusion created by the competing databases and servers now handling geographic data.

"Instead of deciding on a 'killer app' like a panic button on a phone or PDA, we recognized that people need access to a standard set of core location-based functions available anywhere, on any device," Robin Elenga, business development manager for MobileGIS, told Wireless NewsFactor. "We want to identify those functions, an evaluate them for useability."
