Tokyo -- "Toshiba Corp said on Thursday it would set up a factory to make mobile handsets in China as early as January, becoming the latest Japanese electronics manufacturer to tap that fast-growing Asian market.

"The company said it would invest hundreds of millions of yen in a new factory expected to be built in Nanjing.

"Toshiba had pinned its hopes of global expansion on an alliance with Germany's Siemens AG , with which it planned to develop and market third-generation (3G) phones
