SUN Offers Enhanced J2ME Wireless Toolkit
Posted: 01-Dec-2001 [Source: SUN Microsystems press release]

[The J2ME Wireless Toolkit version 1.0.3 is available on the Linux, Solaris[tm], and Windows platforms. ]

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Sun Microsystems today announced it is offering an enhanced version of the Java[tm] 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME[tm]) Wireless Toolkit. Live demonstrations of the toolkit, including the early access Japanese version will be at the JavaOne(SM) Conference in Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama, November 28-30, 2001.

The updated toolkit securely integrates with major Java technology Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and is the first toolkit to deliver a set of enhanced new features that enable the design and implementation of Over-The-Air (OTA) provisioning for mobile devices. OTA provisioning is the wireless delivery of applications and services over a secure network to mobile devices, including mobile handsets and PDAs. Named this June by JavaWorld.com as the "Best Java Device Application", the J2ME Wireless Toolkit will help generate more rich and innovative applications and services for Java technology-enabled devices.

"The Java technology-enabled mobile and wireless markets are growing rapidly," said Peter Young, vice president for Forte Tools at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "With this toolkit, Forte[tm] for Java software developers have seamless access to Java technologies that span from the heart of the enterprise with Enterprise JavaBeans[tm] components to the edge of the network with J2ME platform-enabled client devices."

"The J2ME Wireless Toolkit provides a complete, easy-to-use reference platform for wireless development," said Tony de la Lama, vice president and general manager of Java solutions for Borland. "By integrating Borland JBuilder MobileSet, Borland JBuilder, the market leading Java development environment, and the Wireless Toolkit, we provide a comprehensive, best-in-class development environment for designing, debugging, and deploying J2ME applications."

"Metrowerks tool suite for wireless development is enhanced by the J2ME Wireless Toolkit and provides content developers with a complete development suite for wireless and mobile devices," said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks. "Metrowerks has consistently led the industry, delivering the first development suite to comprehensively support Sun's J2ME technology -- CodeWarrior for Java, Version 6.0. And we are committed to providing the best development environment for the J2ME platform."

With this enhanced toolkit, Sun is helping developers to efficiently and quickly create applications while leveraging the expertise of major Java technology IDEs. The leading Java technology IDE vendor solutions include Sun's Forte for Java, Borland JBuilder MobileSet, and Metrowerks CodeWarrior for Java. Sun's J2ME Wireless Toolkit works with these IDEs to provide an easy-to-use development environment with which developers can write, test and debug applications.

The toolkit also helps operators and handset manufacturers to offer a wider range of applications and services with the flexibility of the Java platform and now, the ability to deliver these offerings OTA.

"Sun is providing another important feature that will enable operators, handset manufacturers and content providers to provide compelling content, even after the device has been delivered," said Rich Green, vice president and general manager for Java and XML Software at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "This further extends Java technology's lead in the wireless market and creates new revenue potential because customers can make use of new applications and services at anytime, anywhere, and on any device".

"Developers will embark on a new frontier lined with opportunity, innovation and creativity with the Java wireless toolkit," said James Gosling, vice president, Sun Fellow and the "Father of Java." "Java technology continues to drive the next-generation of wireless services with developers worldwide."

Key features of the J2ME Wireless Toolkit that enable developers to test the creation and secure delivery of applications to devices in a development environment, include:

An emulation environment documentation, and examples - Provides an emulated device on a desktop computer system for easily packaging and testing applications. The Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) and Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) reference implementations 1.0.3 - Enables the testing of the same J2ME applications that run on other CLDC/MIDP compliant mobile phones and entry level PDAs. Secure HTTP - Allows secure network connection for delivery of applications and services from mobile devices to standard HTTPS web servers. Source level debugging - Enables more precise detection of application bugs. The MIDP for Palm OS 1.0 - Provides an optimized Java runtime environment targeted at Palm OS handhelds and a standard set of Application Program Interfaces (APIs). It enables Palm OS users to run nearly all Java technology-based applications available for CLDC/MIDP compliant mobile phones and entry-level PDAs. Availability and Pricing The J2ME Wireless Toolkit version 1.0.3 is available on the Linux, Solaris[tm], and Windows platforms.
