Seattle -- RealNetworks(r), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK) today announced that worldwide mobile operators AT&T Wireless, Sonera, StarHub Mobile and Telefonica Moviles Espana are conducting wireless digital media trials using RealNetworks' technology and content over their next-generation 2.5G data networks. These data networks, using a technology called GPRS (General Packet Radio Services), allow an always-on Internet connection in addition to substantial increases in bandwidth for mobile users.

RealNetworks' mobile technology, which is based on RealSystem iQ media delivery architecture and includes support for Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standards, is designed to increase both customer satisfaction and revenue by satisfying consumer demand for digital audio and video services on their mobile devices. RealSystem iQ, a robust, standards-based, OS-independent, media delivery system provides the technical foundation to deliver more than 50 data types from any platform to any device. RealNetworks is in the unique position to be the only company providing wireless carriers with the end-to-end technology for deployment of commercial mobile media services complete with extensive licensed content solutions.

"We are excited to see RealNetworks, a leading media delivery technology company, turn its attention to the challenges of mobile multimedia solutions," said Rod Nelson, chief technology officer for AT&T Wireless. "With RealNetworks' mobile technology, RealNetworks and its partners are moving toward support of new mobile business models and innovative service opportunities for carriers and applications providers alike. We think that RealNetworks efforts to support 3GPP standards for media content are particularly encouraging because of the carrier's need to provide ubiquitous capabilities across the entire range of wireless devices."

"Worldwide mobile industry leaders such as AT&T Wireless, Sonera, StarHub Mobile and Telefonica Moviles Espana understand that multimedia delivery to mobile devices is the next logical step for wireless services," said Daniel Sheeran, vice president, Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "Because RealNetworks' content partners already generate thousands of hours of new content every day, wireless carriers are well positioned to utilize and test this technology today and envisage the new mobile multimedia revenue businesses of tomorrow."

"Sonera is excited about the future of mobile delivery of digital media," said Jukka Helin, Head of Sonera Plaza Medialab. "We are delighted to be working with RealNetworks, as we are developing our portal towards a true multi-access service with a strong emphasis on mobile services."

"StarHub is always on the lookout for innovative products and services to delight our customers. Video-streaming is one good example. As such, we are very excited to be amongst the first in the world to test the capability of RealNetworks' technology over our GPRS network. We look forward to cooperating with RealNetworks for this exciting technology," said Chan Kin Hung, vice president, StarHub Mobile.
