[Sprint PCS to bring Hitachi phones supporting J2ME to the US with the launch of 3G1X debuting mid-2002.]

Kansas City, MO -- Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS), which operates the largest all-digital, all-PCS nationwide wireless network and is the fastest growing wireless carrier, announced today that Sprint PCS will be the first wireless carrier to bring Hitachi phones to the United States. A leader in CDMA wireless technology outside of the United States, Hitachi, Ltd., will debut new Third-Generation (3G) Sprint PCS phones in mid-2002 when Sprint PCS launches 3G1X over its nationwide wireless network.

For Sprint PCS customers, 3G is expected to initially mean faster wireless data speeds and enhancements to their existing applications and services. It also creates an opportunity for new and more robust applications as data speeds increase including enhanced games, video and audio clips, high-speed Internet browsing, email with attachments, digital imaging and enhanced messaging.

The new Sprint PCS Phones by Hitachi are expected to support many of these new applications by supporting Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME*), easy navigation with user-friendly icons and audio and video applications.

"Sprint PCS has been a leader in the U.S. wireless market with new products and services and will clearly continue this tradition by launching 3G nationwide in mid-2002. Hitachi, Ltd., has its own long line of wireless phone firsts with CDMA overseas," said John Garcia, senior vice president of sales and distribution for Sprint PCS. "The combination of these two strong, innovative companies will make quite an impression on wireless customers when 3G Sprint PCS Phones by Hitachi launch in mid-2002."

"Hitachi, Ltd., took note of the unrivaled wireless industry advancements made by Sprint PCS in North America as it mirrors the technological developments Hitachi has made overseas," said Hiroshi Nakayama, Group Executive of Digital Media Group for Hitachi, Ltd., "Sprint PCS is clearly the company through which Hitachi wants to market its wireless phones. And, by introducing the new Sprint PCS Phones by Hitachi as Sprint PCS launches 3G, it enables Hitachi to showcase its best wireless technology supporting the JAVA platform, color-enhanced applications and audio."
