Motorola to re-enter Japanese handset market
Posted: 18-Jan-2002 [Source: FT]

[Motorola exec forecasts a reentering of the Japanese handset market once a global standard is in place to "leverage our R&D expenses against."]

by Alexandra Harney, Tokyo -- "Motorola, the world's second largest mobile phone manufacturer, is preparing to re-enter the Japanese handset market, according to a senior executive.

"John Thode, vice president and general manager of 3G products at Motorola, said the group was working closely with NTT DoCoMo and other mobile operators with the aim of introducing products once "we have a global standard that we can leverage our R&D expenses against."

"After a successful streak in the 1980s, Motorola withdrew most of its phones from the Japanese market in 1995, although it continued to sell some through KDDI, the second largest telecommunications operator, until 2000. Like rivals Nokia and Ericsson, Motorola found that Japan's unique technology standards made it difficult to make money here.
