China Mobile to Open GPRS Network in May

[China Mobile to introduce its GPRS network in May to compete with China Unicom's CDMA network which started last January.]

"China Mobile would open its GPRS network in May, sources from the company said on March 5.

"Construction of the GPRS network turned out smoother than expected and main technological difficulties had been overcome, China Mobile said.

"GPRS refers to General Packet Radio Service, a transitional technology from GSM to WCDMA. China Mobile kicked off its global bidding for GPRS project on September 2000, in which four companies, Huawei, Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia were sorted out to provide basic equipment and service for the construction of GPRS network.
