Posted: 03-Apr-2002 [Source: WAPsight]

[Four Canadian carriers make inter-carrier availability of SMS a first in North America.]

Toronto, Canada -- Bell Mobility, Microcell PC(Fido), Rogers AT&T Wireless and TELUS Mobility announced commercial availability of inter-carrier SMS across Canada. Customers of all four carriers can now send SMS messages by simply addressing their message to a recipient's wireless phone number providing real-time, two-way text messaging.

The number of SMS messages sent in the world has grown from 2 billion messages per month to over 16 billion. The growth in SMS has found phenomenal growth in Europe and Asia primarily due to inter-carrier collaboration.

Plans are for each carrier to do their own billing charging per-message or offering unlimited usage. Customers are being encouraged to check with their provider for details.
