[Today RIM announced plans to offer a BlackBerry reference design for the development of devices based on BlackBerry and Java technologies.]

RIM to offer BlackBerry reference design program providing a platform for other manufacturer's to bild advanced wireless phones and handhelds based on embedded BlackBerry and Java technologies.

Analog Devices, Inc. will provide an integrated processor that supports both wireless communications and Java applications on a single chip to the participating manufacturers. This chip integrates DSP (Diginal Signal Processing) and microprocessor functionality into a single chip thereby allowing manufactures to build next-generation devices for advanced GPRS networks. This produces advantages in terms of size, cost, power consumption and time-to-market.

Brian McAloon, Analog Devices, noted that "the availability of a powerful embedded Java engine on this platform opens up enormous potential for easy applications development and rollout, supporting value added services over the network."
