XM Fears Interference By Wireless Gear
Posted: 11-Apr-2002 [Source: Newsbytes]

[Concerns over spectrum signal interference continue, this time involving Wi-Fi and satellite radio.]

by Renae Merle, Washington, D.C. -- "XM Satellite Radio Inc. and rival Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. say they are concerned that signals emitted from a fast-growing wireless technology could interfere with their national radio services. "The technology, known as wireless fidelity, or wi-fi, allows users to establish wireless Internet connections for laptop computers and personal digital assistants such as the Palm and iPaq. Most manufacturers of wi-fi equipment use a part of the radio spectrum close to the segment used by XM and Sirius. The proximity and proliferation of wi-fi technology may eventually interfere with their service, the two company say.

"Sirius and XM have asked the Federal Communications Commission to force the wireless firms to either lower their power output or add filtering equipment to their machines. As wireless devices "move forward, there is a good possibility, they could cause interference," said Lon Levin, XM's senior vice president for regulatory affairs. "We're confident that the FCC will not allow this to happen."
