Multi-Media Messaging Gaining Momentum
Posted: 21-Apr-2002 [Source: WAPsight]

[A variety of operators have made recent announcements regarding the launching of their MMS services.]

Multi-media messaging or MMS permits the transmission of much larger data packets compared to SMS. MMS requires special handsets allowing users to exchange multi-media content such as digital photos, video sequences, music files, and animated greeting cards. These messages can be sent either from mobile handset to mobile handset or between a mobile handset and the Internet.

As part of Deutsche Telekom's major media event held last week, T-Mobile UK announced they will be providing MMS to their subscribers beginning June 1. T-Mobile UK would like to boost their current data sales from 13 percent to 25 percent by 2005.

Vodafone D2, Germany's number two mobile operator, recently announced the launch of their MMS three months ahead of schedule.

Hungary's mobile operator, Westel, also recently announced the launching of their MMS service. They are laying claim to being the first GSM network provider to launch the service which is based on Ericsson technology. MMS is to be available for almost 2.75m Westel subscribers.

Earlier this month Portugal's leading mobile phone operator, Telecomunicates Moveis Nacionais, announced it will deploy CMG's Multimedia Messaging Service Centre.

Hong Kong also recently got its first MMS services via CSL Limited using the Nokia MMS solution.
