Vodafone begins to build 3G Dutch site
Posted: 22-Apr-2002 [Source: FT]

[Vodafone's Libertel to launch UMTS in the Netherlands in early 2003.]

by Ian Bickerton, Amsterdam -- "Vodafone, the mobile phone group, said it was the first Dutch operator to begin building a third-generation mobile network in the Netherlands and promised to deliver UMTS multimedia services early in 2003.

It said some aerials had been positioned in Amsterdam last month and that it would have a "significant number" in the Dutch capital, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam by the year-end, although nationwide coverage would not be achieved until 2007.

Vodafone's Dutch subsidiary, formerly known as Libertel, is the second biggest of five mobile incumbents in the Netherlands that won UMTS licences in a state-run auction in July 2000."
