3G launch helps Japan's KDDI regain second place
Posted: 10-May-2002 [Source: FT]

[KDDI's growing number of subscribers moves its "au" 3G service into second place in Japan's hot mobile phone market.]

by Martin Arnold -- "KDDI said on Thursday it had regained second place in Japan's increasingly competitive mobile phone market on the strength of its recently launched third generation service, overtaking Vodafone's J-Phone business by 5,000 subscribers in April.

Shares in KDDI rose 8.8 per cent to Y358,000 after it said it had sold 330,000 phones for its new high speed internet access service in April - the first month of its launch - more than its own target of 280,000.

The better-than-expected take up of its 3G service helped au, KDDI's wireless arm, to add 196,100 new subscribers in April and overtake J-Phone, which in March gained second place on the back of its own camera phone service.

KDDI has 12.41m subscribers, but NTT DoCoMo remains the clear market leader in Japan with 41.06m users."
