U.S. Launches Cell Phone Safety Web Site

[Cell Phone Facts site launches and is operated jointly by FDA and FCC. ]

by Jay Wrolstad -- "Two U.S. government agencies charged with regulating mobile phones have combined their radio-frequency and phone-safety data to establish a Web site for consumers.

The Cell Phone Facts site was launched this week by the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The site includes basic explanations about how cell phones and wireless base stations work, describes the current standards for these devices, and answers questions commonly raised about the safety of wireless equipment.

While links to health-related reports are included, the Web site says that -- thus far -- no definitive connection has been established between mobile phone use and health hazards.

Bruce Romano, assistant chief in the FCC's office of engineering and technology, told Wireless NewsFactor that the FCC and the FDA have separate consumer affairs departments, but "this gathers the expertise from both agencies and offers information that is consistent, eliminating confusion for the public."
