KDDI sees tripled profits thanks to 3G boom
Posted: 17-May-2002 [Source: FT]

[GPS functionality and low price appear to be key ingredients in helping KDDI gain new 3G subscribers and boost profits.]

by Michiyo Nakamoto, Tokyo -- "KDDI, Japan's second largest telecoms group, on Thursday forecast that group net profits would more than triple to $384m this year thanks to restructuring and the boost from its third generation mobile phone service.

"We have finally returned to the cost levels seen before our merger, so next year we will see the real cost benefits from the merger," Tadashi Onodera, president, said. KDDI was formed through the merger of KDD, IDO and DDI at the end of 2000.

KDDI has seen a strong uptake of its 3G service, which it launched in April."
