Latin American Wireless Summit Announced
Posted: 18-May-2002 [Source: Alacel press release]

[The Latin American Mobile Industry Association, Alacel, to host summit focusing on expansion of prepaid services in Latin America.]

Prepaid Wireless Subscribers in Latin America constitute an important source of income for the Wireless carriers that offer this modality of mobile services. Prepaid originated through the development of marketing experiences in Latin American countries. Meeting with success, Prepaid then began to spread to the rest of the world and the demand for Prepaid services continues to increase.

Today, approximately 70% of the mobile subscribers in Latin America make use of prepaid plans. The number of wireless users in this region exceeded 80 million at the end of 2001, with 56 million of these users participating in Prepaid telephony. These numbers demonstrate that mobile phones ceased to be merely a luxury and became a popular consumption product.

The implementation of Prepaid service had different consequences among carries with some paradoxical results. On one hand, these services increased the mobile subscribers' database, particularly in middle class to low income sectors. They also penetrated among adolescents, travelers, and individuals that occasionally need a mobile phone. On the other hand, the carriers had to accept, with resignation, the reduction in the ARPU's index of consumption, which had a direct impact on billing.

Additionally, the deceleration of the economy has made Prepaid services one of the greatest challenges for the operators, as they must be able to assure their revenues in a reduced consumption sector with great elasticity.

Due to these factors the wireless sector is encountering a new stage in mobile communications. New applications as well as Value Added Services will play a key roll in stimulating the usage amount among Prepaid Subscribers.

Through this and future workshops, ALACEL summons all the operators of the region to share information and discuss their individual experiences on the subject. This Workshop will provide a complete vision, including solutions to maximize revenues from Pre-paid initiatives targeting specific segments that can guarantee the profitability of the business and simultaneously maintain or improve the market share in a competitive environment.

We created this conference to target all aspects of marketing, service, and technology issues providing a thorough opportunity to share in-depth research with your peers and partners in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.
