[New platform being tested in Korea promoting easy wireless Internet access.]

by Kim Deok-hyun -- "Korea Network Information Center (KRNIC) has announced plans for a new type of Internet access platform for mobile phone users.

Called the wireless number connection method to content (WINC), the new platform will promote wireless Internet services and be closely tied to user-friendly operating systems, allowing mobile users to log on to Web sites using simple numbers.

A cooperative between three cell phone companies _ SK Telecom, KTF and LG Telecom _ the KRNIC began a trial service for the wireless Internet access platform in early April.

Here is how the system works. A mobile phone user who wants to connect to the KRNIC's Web site ( can reach the address by pressing the 6,4 and 2 buttons on the handset, which correspond to the letters n, i and c.

When the number buttons for an Internet address are identical with other institutions, for instance the Information and Communication Ministry's Web site (, a user should press the # button and then the 1 button to log on to the site."
