Infineon plans 3G chip packages by 2005
Posted: 24-Jun-2002 [Source: Reuters via CNet]

[Munich-based Infineon's recently announced partnership with Motorola and Agere Systems is expecting to become a key player in 3G handset technology.]

"Ulrich Schumacher said the Munich-based group's recent joint venture with U.S. peers Motorola and Agere Systems would help it produce the technological heart of new generation handsets that combine the functions of a mobile phone with the ability to send pictures and e-mails.

"By the time UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is market-ready in 2004 or 2005, we will have complete solutions on offer--cheaper and at least as good as those of the manufacturers which already are drumming for business," he told Focus magazine in an interview issued ahead of publication.

The packages, combining software, system design and chips in one pre-made component, would be supplied to handset makers as the operating core of new mobile Internet devices, posing a potential challenge to existing manufacturers like Nokia, Siemens and Motorola itself."
