Gadget Designers Try to Pry PC Users Away From Desks

[Wrap-up on last week's TechXNY show which had several companies showcasing new PDA's and handsets.]

by Mike Musgrove, New York -- "The slogan that greeted visitors at the entrance to the PC Expo trade show was "What's next is here." But an alternate slogan could well be "It is now safe to turn off your computer."

This year's show (which ended yesterday and was part of an amalgam of conventions called "TechXNY") suggested that tech builders in search of the Next Big Thing are betting that people want to get away from their keyboards and mice.

Handheld organizers, for example, continue to take on tasks once left to laptops and desktops, thanks to their increased wireless capacity and productivity software.

Some manufacturers are even trying to displace traditional consumer-electronics gear. Sony seems to want to put a home entertainment system in your pocket with its flashy, geek-hypnotizing Clie handhelds, which take digital pictures and play music or video files. Hewlett-Packard's new iPaqs have upgraded infrared ports and remote-control software from Universal Electronics that can control 20 kinds of home electronics."
