[Alltel choses Motorola's SMS Center platform and gateway products.]
Arlington Heights, Ill. -- "Alltel has chosen Motorola's Short Messaging Service (SMS) Center platform and Gateway products to form a foundation that will enable mobile subscribers to enjoy simple, convenient and useful new wireless applications.
Alltel has SMS capability in all its markets across the United States, including the major cities of Phoenix, New Orleans, Little Rock and Charlotte.
"These products and services were developed with the operator in mind. Large throughput of messages are supported on a small investment, and Alltel is now in a position to increase its average revenue per user by offering value added data services that complement its wireless voice services," said Fred Wright, senior vice president and general manager for North America for Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector.
Motorola's SMSC handles input, collection, storage, management and forwarding of messages and emails for delivery to subscriber handsets. To handle the variety of ways in which messages are created, the SMSC can interface to multiple intelligent peripheral devices such as voice mail systems, wireless Internet gateways, instant messaging servers, chat servers, information servers and fax storage devices. Devices are able to initiate messages to the SMSC for delivery to the handset on both Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) networks.
The SMS gateway provides a secure, single point of access into Alltel's network for third party applications. It also can allow intercarrier SMS between operator networks.
