[Indonesia's Telkomsel launches its first GPRS service beginning in Jakarta, Bali Island, Batam Island and Surabaya.]

Indonesia's leading cellular operator Telkomsel and Nokia have signed a contract for the nationwide supply of Nokia's General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) core network solution. As a result of this, Telkomsel commercially launched its first GPRS services on 8th October, 2002.

Under the agreement, Nokia provides the GPRS core network, Charging Gateway, Nokia Terminal Management Server (NTMS) and several applications such as MMS cartoons, comics, images/photos and polyphonic ringing tones. Telkomsel will first introduce GPRS services in the country's capital Jakarta, Bali island, Batam island and the country's second city Surabaya, soon to be followed by other large cities such as Medan, Pekanbaru, Semarang and Yogyakarta.

Additionally, Nokia delivers, on a turnkey basis, GPRS network planning, installation and integration services, multivendor interoperability testing (IOT), charging gateway integration to Telkomsel's existing billing system, training and the facilitation of applications development. With Nokia's GPRS solution, Telkomsel will be able to provide higher-speed data communications to its subscribers - offering packet switched data through the enhanced GSM network.

"Telkomsel is pleased to have selected Nokia as it's strategic technology partner offering end to end solutions for Telkomsel's mobile Internet infrastructure," says Mr. Mulia Tambunan, President Director of Telkomsel.

"Using Nokia's technology and applications support, we have been able to launch a new service to our customers, not just a new technology. The continued addition of Nokia's latest technologies into Telkomsel's network will allow us to offer the most competitive, high quality and flexible service portfolio to our customers," he adds. "Nokia has been in co-operation with Telkomsel since 1996. As one of Telkomsel's strategic partners, Nokia welcomes the opportunity to work closely with Telkomsel as a company that has an inspired vision of the future that aligns with ours," says Risto Poskiparta, Nokia Networks' Account Director for Telkomsel.

"With the launch of Telkomsel's GPRS network, consumers will be able to experience innovative and exciting global and local applications, including enriched person-to-person multimedia messaging," he adds. PT Telekomunikasi Selular ("Telkomsel") is the market leader in Cellular Telecommunications Services (mobile operator) in Indonesia, having a share of more than 50% of the total Indonesian cellular market, which consists of over 9 million active users and 9 operators. The company serves more than 5 million customers, 80% of which are prepaid users, on a nationwide network covering about 80% of the population of this fourth most populous country in the world. The company is jointly owned by PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia, Tbk 65% and Singapore Telecom 35%.
