TI Eyes Boost from Japan's New 3G Phones

[TI is betting the introduction of new 3G handset by Japanese carriers will boost worldwide demand for their OMAP wireless chips.]

Tokyo -- "Texas Instruments (TI), the world's largest maker of microchips for cellphones, hopes for a big boost from new handsets to be launched this year for third-generation (3G) wireless services in Japan, an executive said on Thursday.

NTT DoCoMo, Japan's dominant wireless carrier, will soon roll out new handsets with longer battery life and other improvements to bolster its year-old 3G service, which has lured few users despite fancy features including high-speed Internet access and video phone calling.

"We believe our Japanese customers with these advanced products will move out of Japan into the worldwide market and be very successful," Nigel Dixon, general manager of TI's wireless terminals unit in Japan, said in an interview.

"We believe there's very big business here."

He declined to give revenue targets for TI's cellphone chip business in Japan, but said the Japan unit had assembled a 60-strong engineering and marketing force to advance TI's new OMAP wireless chip architecture, which has high hopes for 3G."
