National Semi, ARM to Extend Cell Phone Battery
Posted: 11-Nov-2002 [Source: Reuters]

[New technology to extend life of batteries, reduce size and cut costs of cell phones to be jointly developed by National Semiconductor and ARM holdings.]

San Francisco -- "National Semiconductor Corp. NSM.N and ARM Holdings Plc ARM.L ARMHY.O said on Monday they would team up to develop and sell technology to extend the life of cellular phone batteries, ultimately by up to five times current levels.

Those improvements could mean six to nine hours of battery life on a single charge in the technology's initial rollout, said Ravi Ambatipudi, a senior manager in the portable power systems group of Santa Clara, California-based National Semiconductor.

The technology will let cell phone makers reduce the battery's size and cut the size and cost of phones, he said."
