[Telcel becomes first wireless operator in Mexico to ofer Multimedia Messaging Services.]

Ericsson has been selected as sole supplier by Telcel to deploy its end-to-end Multimedia Messaging Services solution in Mexico. With this contract, leading Mexican operator Telcel will be the first wireless operator in the country to offer the new service. Telcel intends to commercially launch the service, which will be offered through the existing GSM/GPRS mobile network, in early 2003.

The contract covers a total MMS solution including the MMS center, WAP gateway, multimedia library and non-MMS phone support. The contract also includes service and integration of all elements into Telcel's existing GSM mobile network.

"Color pictures and sounds make Mobile Internet more personal, powerful and fun, and this is what MMS is about," says Robert Puskaric, Vice President of Ericsson Mexico. "This important contract with Telcel goes hand in hand with the solid development of GPRS services, bringing high-speed Mobile lnternet services to the Mexican market."

"MMS is an integral part of Telcel's strategy to offer our customers the most advanced messaging services. At present, Telcel's customers are able to compose photographs, store them in their GSM phones and furthermore send them out through e-mail to PCs and PDAs, anywhere in the world. With MMS, customers will be able to send pictures to other Telcel GSM phones, as well as download images, animations, and color content with sounds from our servers," says Humberto Chavez, Value Added Services Director of Telcel.

"We chose Ericsson for our MMS solution, because as our main GSM infrastructure supplier, they can assure the best and fastest integration to the existing network, as well as give us the advantage of a platform proven in other countries," concluded Humberto Chavez.

MMS offers a dramatic increase in mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-e-mail messaging capabilities by enabling color pictures, animations, audio and video clips to be sent along with text, such as electronic postcards, animated cartoons and multimedia presentations.
