NEC shows n22i, e606, and e808 handsets

[NEC showed their latest i-mode handset, the n22i, today at 3GSM in Cannes. The handset will be offered through Bouygues Telecom to i-mode users in France. ]

Cannes, France -- NEC's latest i-mode(TM) handset, the fold-form n22i, supplied to European operator Bouygues Telecom for their i-mode service in France, will be exhibited for the first time at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France. Attractively compact and stylish, the handset was chosen by Bouygues Telecom to enhance the profile of their successful i-mode(TM) services and applications.

Mobility is the key feature provided by the n22i, with users able send and receive emails while 'on the go' using Bouygues Telecom's i-mode service, which was launched in France in November 2002. The handset is equipped with a large 4,096 colour display, and is ideal for browsing the many content-rich i-mode websites available to users.

Live demonstrations of the handset's features and capabilities will take place at the NEC Stand throughout 3GSM. These demonstrations will capture the essence of i-mode by showing off a range of i-mode websites on n22i handsets supplied by Bouygues Telecom.

500 names can be stored in the n22i memory, each of which can be allocated up to seven different numbers, for example a home number, a mobile number, an office number and an e-mail address. The phone book is easily accessed using the dedicated phonebook key above the main keypad.

The phone book can be programmed so that specific names are assigned a particular picture or image, which will then be displayed on the large internal LCD in full colour as a call from that person is received. In a similar fashion, ring tones can be attributed to specific callers, chosen from the range of twenty-three high-quality 40-chord ring tones supported by the handset. A second LCD, clearly visible on the top flip, can be programmed in conjunction with the phone book to flash in one of 12 bright colours to display the caller's identity. This popular and efficient feature is unique to NEC handsets.

Weighing 110g, with a volume of 94cc, the metallic n22i has an internal antenna and can be further enhanced by snapping on one of four coloured covers available. The clamshell design, now one of the most popular styles on the market, enables the handset to be easily stored as well as protecting its soft icon display.

Sending and receiving SMS and EMS is easily achieved with the n22i, which features predictive (T9) text input, as does the user-friendly email service, which comes as part of the range of i-mode services.

NEC was also chosen by Bouygues Telecom as the preferred supplier of the i-mode(TM) mobile multimedia platform in France. This platform was developed over a period of six months and is made up of a set of servers and integrated software enabling customers to access the i-mode services. The work on both this platform and the delivery of handsets demonstrate NEC's ability to provide an "end-to-end" offer to customers.

NEC is the first manufacturer to deliver i-mode handsets to operators in Europe, building on the experiences in Japan, where i-mode handsets have been supplied to NTT DoCoMo, who first launched i-mode in 1999. NEC has also delivered i-mode handsets to the KPN Group (KPN Mobile in the Netherlands, E-Plus in Germany and Base in Belgium).
