Siemens Radio Technology Installed at Health Care and Social Institutions

[GSM/GPRS radio modules are finding applications in remote patient telemonitoring.]

Cannes, France -- Siemens Information and Communication Mobile division (Siemens mobile) is participating in the European Union's (EU) project "Healthmate" by providing wireless GSM/GPRS modules to the health sector for use in special applications that enable the remote care of patients such as Alzheimer patients and heart patients. Siemens wireless technology is also being used in the ALVA Mobile Phone Organizer (MPO), which helps visually impaired to use electronic communications.

Behind the Healthmate project is the Healthmate Consortium, which consists of businesses and universities based in Spain, France and Germany. Siemens mobile provides wireless GSM/GPRS modules for telemonitoring devices currently in development, including:

* Hot Key is a GSM/GPRS health support device designed for individuals with orientation problems when travelling. Hot Key is equipped with the Global Positioning System (GPS) and can determine the precise location of a patient. For example, if an Alzheimer patient is missing he or she can be located by a designated service centre. The patient can also make an emergency call if needed.

* Siemens wireless technology is also included in the position and navigation health service device for home hospitalisation. In addition to the functions of the Hot Key, it includes a mobile telephone and an interface for attaching medical monitoring devices. The patient can use this wireless device to send telemonitoring information like blood pressure, heart monitor data, pulse, or blood oxygen level statistics to their doctor.

These telemonitoring devices increase patient freedom and reduce dependence. Medical care costs are also reduced.

Siemens wireless technology utilised in Mobile Phone Organizer (MPO) for the visually impaired.

Siemens wireless modules have also been implemented in the Mobile Phone Organizer (MPO) from ALVA, a supplier of displays for the visually impaired. ALVA's MPO is a response to the increasing demand for internet devices that are suitable for the visually impaired as well as the trend towards combining several functions into a single, compact device.

The MPO uses the tri-band MC45 GSM/GPRS module from Siemens mobile, which enables fast voice and data communications and the use of applications such as SMS, e-mail, mobile telephony and date planning. The integration of the wireless module into the Organizer was performed by Pemstar, a provider of comprehensive engineering, manufacturing and fulfilment services.
