Global Cell-Phone Sales Rose 14% in Q4, Gartner Says

[New report from Garner's Dataquest shows Nokia retaining the number one spot in mobile phone sales with Sony Ericsson being the only one among the top five handset manufacturers to lose market share.]

by Minoru Matsutani, Tokyo -- "Worldwide mobile-phone sales rose 14 percent in the fourth quarter, helped by a surge in demand for models with new features such as color screens, Gartner Inc.'s Dataquest market-research unit said.

Global handsets sales rose to 122.6 million units in the three months ended Dec. 31, Dataquest said in a press release. For all of 2002, sales rose 6 percent to 423.4 million units compared with the previous year, it said."
