Vodafone wavers on 3G
Posted: 28-Mar-2003 [Source: Times Online]

[Vodafone's Gent says 3G launch may have to wait until January if "handover" problems continue to exist between 2G and 3G coverage areas.]

by Dan Sabbagh -- "The chief executive of Vodafone, Sir Christopher Gent, is prepared to postpone its launch of fast internet, third generation (3G) mobile phone service until next year if the reliability of the technology does not improve.

Europe's biggest mobile group had planned to start a limited 3G service in October, but Sir Christopher is concerned that the "handover" problems between second and third generation coverage areas have not been resolved.

At present, if a customer strays outside the limited third generation areas, any calls in progress will be cut off even though the phone is supposed to be able to switch seamlessly to an existing second generation network."
