NEC to Supply Internet-Ready Cell Phones to AT&T Wireless
Posted: 16-Jul-2003 [Source: NE Asia Online]

[NEC to reeneter US mobile handset market later this year following three-year hiatus.]

"NEC Corp will re-enter the US cellular phone market as early as this summer, supplying Internet-ready handsets to AT&T Wireless Services Inc, sources close to the matter said yesterday.

As the No 3 cellular carrier in the US -- in which NTT DoCoMo Inc has a 16% stake -- AT&T Wireless operates an Internet access service called mMode, through which users can access Web sites and e-mail from their cell phones. While the communications format differs from that of DoCoMo's i-mode service, the Japanese carrier has provided expertise in developing mMode."
