Sony NFC-Compliant Wireless Chip Could Debut Before Year End

[Near field wireless, with a range of only 20 cm., is seen as a technology for contactless smart cards. Sony has been active in the standardization and implementation of this technology.]

Tokyo -- "Sony Corp plans to ship engineering samples of a wireless communication chip for Near Field Communication (NFC) based on contactless smart card technologies."

"The chip is to be made by Royal Philips Electronics NV of The Netherlands, and will be commercialized in the second quarter of 2004."

"... Sony announced in September 2002 that it was co-developing NFC technology with Philips. The carrier frequency for NFC is 13.56MHz, the same as that for contactless smart cards. NFC operates over distances of only about 20cm and at data rates of 424kbps."
