Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) announced the launch of two new wireless hotspot services, an Outdoor Wireless Surf prepaid card and *186 Wireless Surf for inbound roamers. The latter is believed to be a world's first for a Wi-Fi service.
Mr Hui Weng Cheong, SingTel's Vice President (Consumer Products), said: "The launch of these two services extends our Wi-Fi network to new customers, who might otherwise not have been able to enjoy Internet access at our wireless surf zones located all over Singapore.
"Those who do not require regular access will find the prepaid card a very convenient tool at a very reasonable price. At the same time, visitors from overseas, especially business travellers, can now go to any of our wireless surf zones to check their email or follow-up with urgent work."
Outdoor Wireless Surf prepaid card
The Outdoor Wireless Surf prepaid card will enable customers to enjoy wireless broadband Internet access at any of SingTel's wireless surf zones located in Singapore. Users need not be subscribers of an ISP or mobile operator to purchase the card which is on sale at selected hello! stores, 7-Eleven outlets and SingPost branches.
The back of each prepaid card contains a user ID and a scratch box containing the password. Each card costs $30 for 100 minutes of Internet access at SingTel's wireless surf zones. It is valid for 180 days from the first log-in.
*186 Wireless Surf for inbound roamers
Visitors from overseas who are roaming on the SingTel mobile network can use SingTel's *Send service to request for a temporary user ID and password to enjoy Outdoor Wireless Surf. This service is believed to be a world's first for wireless Internet access.
Inbound roamers just have to dial *186 on their mobile phones to receive an SMS with the user ID and password. These are valid until 12 midnight on the same day.
There is a one-time charge of 20.8 Singapore cents for each *186 request. The usage charge is 36.4 Singapore cents per minute for Internet access at the wireless surf zones, not including surcharges which may be imposed by the overseas visitors' home operator. The charges will be included in the visitors' mobile phone bill under the international roaming billing agreement between SingTel and the overseas mobile phone operator.
SingTel launched Outdoor Wireless Surf in September last year. Currently, it has more than 170 wireless surf zones in locations such as Starbucks, Burger King, Delifrance outlets, community and country clubs, hotels, hospitals and libraries.
