The mobile communication group at Siemens AG (Siemens mobile) surged ahead in mobile phone business in the Americas. With a market share of
nearly ten percent in Latin America, Siemens mobile moved up to secure its first number- three ranking in the region for the second quarter of
2003*. The company is also sailing a successful course in the United States, where it quadrupled its market share year on year for the second
quarter of 2003**.
Siemens mobile has been enjoying strong growth in Latin America. In a mobile phone market that is growing by well over 23 percent overall, the
company boosted its shipments in this region by over 120 percent in the second quarter of 2003. This enabled the mobile phone manufacturer to
add 4.4 percentage points to its market share during the period. At nearly ten percent, Siemens now holds the third-place position for the
first time in the overall market across all mobile communication standards - in GSM phones, Siemens mobile holds a 20-percent market share, and over 50 percent in the region's largest market, Brazil.
Siemens mobile's year-on-year unit sales growth was even more dramatic:
While the overall market grew by some 20 percent, Siemens mobile was able to increase shipments by more than 370 percent.
Siemens mobile also posted above-average growth in the United States and Canada. In a market with overall growth of around seven percent, the
company increased its shipments by 300 percent year on year, nearly quadrupling its market share. With a market share of well over ten percent in GSM mobile phones in the United States, Siemens mobile advanced to third place among all mobile phone manufacturers. One year after the introduction of a new U.S. product portfolio, Siemens mobile now holds a nearly three-percent share of the total market (CDMA, TDMA,
"Our regional offensive in Latin America and the introduction of a new product portfolio in the United States a year ago are now paying off,"
said Rudi Lamprecht, Member of the Managing Board at Siemens AG. "And in both regions, we've grown significantly faster than the market and have
moved up to number among the top 3 in the GSM market."
The market for GSM mobile phones accounts for around three quarters of the total mobile phone market. Siemens is the number two worldwide in
GSM mobile phones***.
