Global Hotspots to Exceed 45,000 by Year End
Posted: 20-Oct-2003 [Source: Global Wi-Fi]

[Half of the 45,000 global Wi-Fi hotspots expected by year's end to be located in Asia.]

Cambridge -- According to the latest issue of Global Wi-Fi, the number of hotspot locations globally will surpass 45,000 by year end. More than half of these hotspots will reside in Asia, although the U.S. and Europe are gradually taking a larger share of the pie.

"By the end of 2002, there were less than 20,000 hotspots globally," said John Yunker, analyst at Pyramid Research. "The pace of hotspot deployment has quickened over the past three months. We are now on track to see more than 100,000 hotspots deployed by early 2005."

Every two weeks, Pyramid updates its estimates of hotspot deployments across more than 65 countries. Estimates are based on discussions with operators, venues and aggregators. A hotspot equals one location, regardless of how many access points that location may include. For example, Logan Airport equals one hotspot.
