SKT and KTF Launch W-CDMA in S Korea
Posted: 30-Dec-2003 [Source: The Korea Herald]

[S Korean carriers barely meet government deadline for launching W-CDMA service.]

By Yang Sung-jin -- "SK Telecom Co. and KTF Co. launched W-CDMA third-generation mobile services last Friday but they will only accept customers around March next year, suggesting that the much-touted services are fraught with troubles.

The problem is that both SK Telecom and KTF want to delay or cancel W-CDMA service in consideration of its poor commercial potential. Experts said there is little difference between W-CDMA and CDMA2000 1x services in terms of voice and data functionality.

The country's three mobile operators currently offer CDMA2000 1x and its upgrade version EV-DO smoothly. In other words, customers have few incentives to switch to W-CDMA service."
