Tokyo -- Hitachi, Ltd., Ubiquitous Platform Systems Group and Certicom Corp., a leading provider of wireless security solutions, today announced an agreement in which movian(TM) by Certicom wireless security applications will be available on the Hitachi G1000 Multimedia Pocket PC CDMA Phone. This collaboration will enable mobile workers to quickly deploy secure wireless access to enterprise applications, anytime, anywhere on the Hitachi G1000 smart phone.

movianVPN(TM) by Certicom is a software client that establishes a secure tunnel from the device to the existing corporate VPN gateway, encrypting data end-to-end so it is safe from prying eyes. movianVPN interoperates with more than 13 leading VPN gateways, including those from Cisco, Netscreen and Nortel. This interoperability enables enterprises to leverage existing VPN infrastructure and thereby realize a better return on their investment. "Certicom's award-winning movian products round out our mobile offering by providing the most extensive wireless security solution that meets the enterprise's strict requirements," said Tatsuro Arai, Solution Division, Ubiquitous Platform Systems, Hitachi, Ltd. "Being part of the Certicom Partner Network has given us access to the world-class support and technical knowledge we require to meet the security needs of our customers at the highest level."

Enterprises are looking for ways to extend existing security policies to mobile workers. In conjunction with Hitachi's expertise in wireless products and services, movian products provide a complete, cost-effective security solution for handheld devices that allows corporations to leverage existing security infrastructure.

"As a leading global provider of wireless solutions, Hitachi saw the requirement for security as part of a complete mobility solution. Through this new partnership, we will help Hitachi provide the most enhanced security solutions to its customers," said Ian McKinnon, president and CEO of Certicom. "Certicom is committed to working with our world-class partners and strengthening our Partner Network with expanded product offerings and valuable resources."

The Hitachi G1000, exclusively available nationwide to Sprint customers, combines the functionality of a Pocket PC with the advanced wireless data applications delivered by the faster data speeds of the Enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. The Hitachi G1000 is a first-in-its-class "converged device" meaning it offers the power of a PC and convenience of a wireless phone in one compact unit (8.4 oz, 5.8" x 3.3" x 0.9"). It comes loaded with Windows Mobile software for Pocket PCs, 32 MB of memory, 400 MHz Intel XScale(TM) Processor and 65K TFT (Thin Film Transistor) color display. In addition, it is the first wireless Pocket PC device to feature a built-in QWERTY keypad and scroll dial. This single band PCS Vision Phone by Sprint also incorporates a rotating VGA-quality digital camera and is equipped with an SD expansion slot with multimedia card capabilities.

movian security applications bring together the convenience of wireless communications with the security demanded by organizations looking to extend critical enterprise applications such as e-mail and web browsing to mobile professionals. movianVPN provides secure access to the corporate network via wireless devices while movianCrypt(TM) offers secure data storage on the device. movianMail(TM) provides true end-to-end security for e-mail messages and their attachments over any wireless network.
