S Korean Number portability gets off to shaky start

[SK Telecom began number porting option January 1. Glitches in process have sparked a backlash from carriers KTF and LG Telecom scheduled to begin number porting in July and January 2005 respectively.]

By Yang Sung-jin -- The Ministry of Information and Communication on Jan. 1 launched a mobile phone policy that allows users to switch service providers easily, but SK Telecom Co.'s continued system glitches are delaying the process, sparking an uproar from KTF Co. and LG Telecom Co.

Under a scheme known as number portability, SK Telecom subscribers are now allowed to move to KTF or LG Telecom while keeping the same phone number.
