[Industry expert forecasts Japanese companies will continue their "technological advantage" in the global handset market.]

By Kazuhiro Shimamura, Tokyo -- "Japanese companies in the mobile telecommunications industry are likely to keep their technological advantage over rivals in the global market, an industry expert said Friday.

Japan's largest mobile telephone company, NTT DoCoMo Inc., and Japanese handset manufacturers have been successful in some European markets as rival Nokia Corp. "has been slow to introduce good mobile Internet capable phones," said Jeffrey Funk, a professor at Hitotsubashi University's Institute of Innovation Research.

The Japanese carriers continue to lead foreign rivals in the Internet capable mobile phone market, but "whether that's enough to overcome the huge economies of scale that Nokia has is still uncertain," Funk said."
