Samsung's Cutting Edge at CTIA

[Samsung gave us a sneak peek at its future this week at CTIA, and the future is FAST.]

Robert Whitinger - - MobileTechNews, Atlanta -- Imagine a future where you had enough bandwidth in the palm of your hand to view live television broadcasts, carry on videoconferences using high speed bidirectional streaming images. This future may be closer than you might think. This week at CTIA in Atlanta, Samsung gave attendees a sneak peek at its EV-DV handset and base-station capabilities.

Samsung's live demonstration of its CDMA 1xEV-DV systems capability gave us a chance to see what uncompromised motion video will be like as the future unfolds. We picked up a pair of operational EV-DV prototype handsets and quickly established a two-way videoconference call. At 15 frames per second, the full color live images were remarkably clear and free from the motion artifacts often accompanying lower bandwidth video.

The EV-DV technology provides a 3.1Mbps down channel and a 300Kbps up channel. This bandwidth is first prioritized to voice traffic, and then the remaining bandwidth is shared between the data users. But since data traffic is typically running in bursts, there is plenty of bandwidth to go around. All this fits neatly into a single 1.25MHz piece of spectrum.

The Samsung EV-DV base station is based on a flexible design permitting support for existing 1x services as well as both rel c and rel d EV-DV services in the future. EV-DV is undergoing limited trials as carriers evaluate the technology.

Samsung also showed a sneak peek at some of its latest handset devices currently under evaluation at the carriers:
