Sony Ericsson extends EDGE-offering with the S710a and Z500i camera phones
Posted: 15-Jul-2004 [Source: Sony Ericsson]

[New GSM tri-band 3G handsets offer EDGE connectivity speeds of 240 kbps on the download and 120 kbps on the upload. The S710a has a 1.3 MP camera and a 2.3" 262K TFT color screen. The Z500i is PoC capable and shoots short video-clips as well as single shot pics.]

Both phones are Class 10 EDGE-devices taking advantage of the latest EDGE network enhancements to access e-mail, games and information, being capable of uploading information at Speeds up to 240 kbps for downloading and 120 kbps for uploading. EDGE, or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution, is a 3G technology that delivers broadband-like data speeds to mobile devices.

As the earlier announced S700, the S710a has a stylish and unique three way communication style with swivel-design. This offers users the best operation mode depending on the task, whether it is taking photos, browse and talk, or text and e-mail. The S710a features an integrated 1.3 megapixel CCD digital camera for taking high quality photos and a scratch-proof 2.3 inch 262K TFT colour screen to display quality images and games. To further enhance the imaging experience, the S710a comes with a Photo Light to enable snapshots in dark environments and 8x digital zoom so shots can be taken from a distance. As a QuickShare(TM) product, the S710a is extremely easy to use; opening up the active lens cover automatically starts the camera. Pictures or video can be shot with just one click, and then just one or two more clicks to send the images on to friends, colleagues or family.

Users have a choice of several options to transfer images, video clips and other data to PC's and a host of other devices, including MemoryStick Duo, Bluetooth and infrared. The S710a will be available in Q4, 2004.

The Z500i is a neat clamshell phone that offers classic Sony Ericsson styling, great communications features and is extremely easy to use. Its built-in VGA camera can be used for recording still images and video clips and with QuickShare(tm), consumers are just a few clicks away from taking, sending and sharing pictures, sounds and video, offering the unique Sony Ericsson ease-of-use experience on this innovative handset.

It is also one of the first Sony Ericsson phones to offer Push to Talk over Cellular (PoC), a technology that can lower the cost of ownership as it allows mobile phones to function as two-way radios. For shooting and sharing images, the phone's VGA camera records stills and video and QuickShare(tm) allows pictures, sounds and footage to be sent on in just a few clicks. The 65,536 colour display is ideal for viewing all types of images, whether downloading or web-browsing, all of which is made faster thanks to its EDGE data connectivity. When the phone is closed its external 4,096 colour display serves as a viewfinder for capturing images, a display for Picture CallerID, which shows the name and picture of the person calling, or allows the user to read text messages without having to open the phone. The Z500i synchronises easily with a PC and has a number of organiser functions so users can keep up to date with diary and contacts while they're on the move. The Z500i will be available in Q4, 2004.
