Gear Sector Eyes China For 3G Nod
Posted: 09-Sep-2004 [Source: Investors.com]

[The wait continues for China to make a decision regarding 3G licensing with WCDMA, EVDO technologies as well as China's home-grown TD-SCDMA technology all competing for space in the world's largest cell phone market.]

By Mike Angell -- "Mobile phone carriers worldwide are rushing to offer 3G phone service. But the world's biggest cell phone market, China, is in no rush to join in.

3G, or third-generation, phone service makes possible Web surfing, video phone calls and other high-speed data services. Already, 104 such networks are up and running, starting just last year.

But not in China. The industry expected China to set its 3G direction this year, but its plans are on hold while it explores a new version of 3G, called TD-SCDMA.

In the meantime, however, a bevy of companies that hoped to make a bundle selling the gear and services used to build China's 3G networks are on hold. Their road to any riches in China is mired in uncertainties that now are compounded with that nation's efforts with the untested and unproven TD-SCDMA technology."
