[Sony Ericsson announces two entry-level GPRS handsets targeted at the Chinese and Asian Pacific market as well as their latest PC Card combining EDGE and Wi-Fi coverage in a single card, the GC89.]

The J200, is targeted mainly at the China and Asia Pacific markets and will be available during the last quarter of 2004. The second, the T290, will be launched in the same region early in 2005, in time for the traditional gift giving of the Chinese New Year, and then be available globally during the first quarter.

The J200 offers easy talking and easy messaging, all on a 4K colour screen (128 x 128 pixels). Its slim, classic design includes an easy to use joystick for simple navigation and SMS text messaging with predictive text input. The J200 also features a large phone book with up to 200 entries, calendar, alarm clock and a 40 tones polyphonic ringer, with an additional speaker for loud and clear ringtones, even on the street.

The T290's small size, large phonebook, MMS messaging in colour and sturdy styling will also be attractive to the practical phoner segment but appeal more to the young and those looking for a value-for-money phone to support their own private business. The T290 value-for-money packages includes a 32 tones polyphonic ringer with additional speaker, 4K colour screen, an additional speakerphone for conference calls in private or professional use and fast SMS text messaging with predictive text input on a clear and ergonomically designed keypad.

GC89PC Card:

Bridging the cellular and WiFi worlds, the GC89 PC Card combines global EDGE coverage with the popular WiFi technology in a single card which is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computers. The GC89 card delivers connectivity through EDGE, GPRS, CSD, SMS over the GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 bands world-wide. And, for those areas covered by wireless local networks: homes, offices, and hotspot locations such as airport lounges, coffee shops and hotels, the GC89 provides 802.11b and g connectivity with speed potential in excess of 50 Megabits per second.(1)

The card also features compatibility with Release 4 of the EDGE standard addressing the very important matter of up-link speeds necessary for professionals on the go to send large amounts of data such as presentations or spreadsheets.

The GC89 card is easy to install and compatible with most laptop operating systems as well as all the familiar software applications (e.g. MS Exchange, MS Outlook, Netscape, CRM, SAP, Siebel, Messenger etc.) Sony Ericsson will also offer a version compatible with Macintosh OS.

The GC89 will be available starting Q4 2004 for operator acceptance testing and customer trials, with full commercial availability slated for Q1 2005.

EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) is a third generation cellular (3G) technology delivering broadband-like speeds to mobile data devices. The GC89 EDGE combo card complies with Class 10 rating, or the sending and receiving of data at speeds of up to 247 kbps.
