Today A3UK announced the launch of its TOMP (Translation On Mobile Phones) service, which allows any UK mobile phone user to translate words and phrases via text message on their mobile phone.
To use the service, customers send a text to 88800 stating the word TOMP followed by the languages to translate from and to, and then any word or phrase, e.g. TOMP ENGLISH GERMAN TWO PINTS OF BEER PLEASE. Within seconds, they receive a reply in their choice of European language. Currently, the service supports translation from and to English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch.
Unlike any other mobile phone translation tools currently available, no registration nor additional software is required to access the TOMP service, and it will work on any phone that is subscribed to a UK network provider, even when roaming abroad. Customers are charged on a per-translation basis through their normal billing provider, either by contract or pay-as-you-go.
A3UK Director, Alastair Aitchison said: "Mobile phones have penetrated every aspect of modern lifestyles, and they will continue to do so as companies like A3UK innovate with mobile technology. The launch of the TOMP service means that, from today, anybody with a mobile phone can understand, and be understood in, seven different languages. That's something we're very proud of."
