[First EDGE mobile network announced for Siberia developed by Alcatel for CTeK GSM covering the Kuzbass region.]
Paris -- Alcatel announced the signing of a contract with CTeK GSM, a regional mobile operator in Russia, for the first deployment of a GSM/EDGE (Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution) network in Siberia. It covers the Kuzbass region, with above 2.5 million inhabitants in the Russian Federation.
Under the terms of this contract, Alcatel will EDGE-enable the Evolium(tm) 900 and 1800 MHz base stations already installed on the operator's network. The EDGE technology, embedded in the Alcatel's Evolium multi-standard GSM/EDGE/WCDMA radio access solutions and already installed at the CTeK GSM network, will be activated thanks to a simple software activation. Alcatel will also add new base stations to the operator's network to guarantee, on one hand, an increased coverage of the whole territory where the CTeK GSM provides mobile services, and on the other hand, an optimal quality of service.
This project will enable CTeK GSM to deliver to its customers in Kuzbass region new broadband mobile applications and services such as video streaming, MMS, high-speed access to the Internet and electronic mail service.
Delivery of the Alcatel solution is scheduled in steps with the first phase for completion by the second quarter 2005. The commercial service will be operational at the end of the second quarter 2005.
