Nextel to shut down FLASH-ODM trial
Posted: 05-Feb-2005 [Source: MobileTechNews]

[Nextel reportedly set to end its year old FLASH-OFDM trial in Raleih-Durham at the end of June.]

Recent reports note Nextel sent an email to its Wireless Broadband Customers stating the service will be terminated at the end of June. The end of the FLASH-OFDM trial is apparently a by-product of Nextel's merger with Sprint. Sprint has made a major financial committment to EV-DO for its next-generation voice and data service.

It was on February 6 of last year that Nextel announced plans to trial a wireless broadband service in the Raleigh-Durham, NC area using Flarion's FLASH-OFDM Technology. Participants in the trial included employess from Nextel enterprise customers including Cisco, Nortel and IBM. The service was also offered to small and medium-sized companies and individual customers. At that time the project was scheduled to run for a minimum of six months.

Nextel's iDEN 4-in-1 services include Nationwide Direct Connect, cellular voice, cellular wireless Internet access and short messaging. Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology added an optional high-speed data transfer service to Nextel's i-DEN network
