First CDMA2000 Single-Chip Receive Diversity Device

San Diego -- QUALCOMM today announced the sampling of the RFR6500(TM) and RFT6150(TM) devices, a receive diversity solution for CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO networks based on QUALCOMM's radioOne(R) architecture. Mobile receive diversity improves network performance on the forward link by reducing dropped calls and increasing network capacity, for an improved user experience. With the RFR6500 solution, handset manufacturers can develop smaller form factor devices with optimized power consumption. The RFR6500 solution also supports simultaneous-GPS, which allows simultaneous operation of GPS location capabilities and CDMA2000 voice calls. Designed for 1X and 1xEV-DO devices, the RFR6500 solution is backwards compatible for use with existing CDMA2000 networks, resulting in a seamless migration path without added research and development costs.

"QUALCOMM's RFR6500 chip, the industry's first single-chip receive diversity device, gives CDMA2000 operator partners a significant improvement in network performance with increased network data and voice capacity and fewer dropped calls," said Dr. Sanjay K. Jha, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "With the RFR6500 device, OEMs can develop data-intensive devices that provide simultaneous-GPS support and take advantage of the higher data throughput enabled by receive diversity to deliver highly competitive wireless solutions."

This complete RF solution for receive diversity includes the RFT6150 and PM6650(TM) devices, and interfaces with the Mobile Station Modem(TM) (MSM(TM)) MSM6500(TM), MSM6550(TM) and MSM6800(TM) chipset and system software solutions, and will support future diversity-enabled MSM chipsets. Receive diversity uses an additional antenna and associated receive chain to support improved signal reception, enabling higher data throughput and significant increases in network capacity for CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO networks, especially in dense urban environments. The RFR6500 device also supports simultaneous hybrid dual-receive operation, which allows for 1X paging signal monitoring during a 1xEV-DO connection, while monitoring other frequency bands for hand-off.

The RFR6500 solution incorporates dual-band, dual-diversity receive components (receivers for both cellular and PCS bands) into a single chip -- reducing bill-of-materials (BOM) costs and enabling smaller form factor designs. This device also integrates low noise amplifiers, direct down converters, phase locked loop and voltage control oscillator.
