Agilent Intros Tricolor LEDs for mobile phones and PDAs

[New side-firing tricolor surface-mount LEDs permit mixing of red, blue and green light in any combination for backlighting and status indicators in mobile phones and PDAs.]

Palo Alto -- Agilent Technologies Inc. today introduced two side-firing, tricolor surface-mount LEDs (light-emitting diodes) that permit handset and PDA designers to mix separate red, green and blue light sources in any combination. The devices are intended primarily for backlighting and status indicators in handheld devices, such as mobile phones and PDAs.

In the Agilent HSMF-C113 and HSMF-C115 side-firing ChipLED devices, the package is mounted vertically, with the light emitted through a lens on the side rather than the top of the package. This simplifies the coupling of the light to a light pipe for backlighting mobile phone and PDA keypads and LCD screens.

In handsets and other handheld devices, separate colors can indicate incoming SMS (short messaging system) messages, e-mail and stock news. They can even identify different callers. The availability of an unlimited range of illumination colors provides a new degree of design flexibility in many other applications, such as backlighting and status indication in office and industrial equipment and home appliances.

"Our new side-firing, tricolor LEDs give manufacturers more backlighting color options in an ultraminiature package," said Cheng Kai Chong, worldwide marketing manager for the Optoelectronic Products Division in Agilent's Semiconductor Products Group. "They also enable status indicators to display any color desired for executing different tasks. These new devices add to Agilent's extensive product portfolio, giving customers a one-stop-shop solution for their illumination requirements."

The HSMF-C113 and HSMF-C115 side-firing tricolor chip-type LEDs feature a four-terminal common anode connection and are housed in Agilent's miniature 2.5 mm (L) x 1.0 mm (W) x 1.0 mm (H) package among the industry's smallest. Precision manufacturing techniques ensure perfect pick-up by automated manufacturing equipment.

The Agilent HSMF-C113 combines InGaN blue (470 nm dominant wavelength, 60 mcd typical brightness); AlInGaP green (572 nm, 50 mcd); and AlInGaP red (626 nm, 80 mcd) die. All brightnesses measure at 20 mA operating current. The premium HSMF-C115 uses brighter InGaN green, with 525 nm dominant wavelength and 170-mcd typical brightness. Both versions have diffused optics, are compatible with IR (infrared) reflow soldering processes, and are certified lead-free. Agilent's ChipLED package features high thermal-dissipation capability for maximum reliability.

Pricing and Availability

The Agilent HSMF-C113 is priced at $0.58 each, and the HSMF-C115 at $1.00 each, both in 1,000-piece quantities. These ChipLED devices are available now through Agilent's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners. The ChipLED devices are shipped with EIA481-compliant standard packaging: 8 mm carrier tape on 7-inch diameter reel and sealed in moisture barrier bags.
